Helen Lavinia Underwood is a native of Madison County, Alabama. She has taught writing at both the secondary school and college levels, and holds degrees from Martin Methodist College, Middle Tennessee State University, and Rutgers University. While she has written short stories and a collection of poetry, Under Cedar Shades is her first novel. She lives with her husband Joel in Delaware.
